Numbers and Arithmetic

Numbers and arithmetic here run from first counting in the early years (ages 3 to 5) to decimals and percentages in grade 6. Along the way come numbers to 20 and to 100, adding and taking away, multiplication and division, bigger numbers on paper, and fractions. Each topic builds on the one before, so a child can start at the right step.

About Numbers and Arithmetic

Number is where math begins, and here it is one unbroken line through the early grades. First Numbers counts toys, fingers and claps up to ten. Numbers to 20 adds the number line and the first adding and taking away. Numbers to 100 splits numbers into tens and ones, then finds them again on a clock and in coins. In grade 3, multiplication starts as equal groups, and division is the same picture read the other way.

Grade 4 brings bigger multiplication and division on paper, with an estimate beside every answer, and first fractions and decimals. Fractions in grade 5 explains what a denominator counts and how to add fractions that do not match. Decimals and Percentages in grade 6 ends at the percentage on a price tag. Lessi, an AI teacher, teaches each topic live: on a board, out loud, with short quizzes, at the student's pace.
