- First Numbers
How do you teach one more and one less to a preschooler?
Teach one more and one less with real objects and tiny stories. Count a small group together, then add one toy and ask how many there are now, or take one away and ask how many are left. One more is the next counting number and one less is the number just before: 3 cars and one more make 4, and one less leaves 2.
The topic explained
What do one more and one less mean to a young child?
One more means a group grows by a single thing, so the number moves forward one step in the counting order. One less means a group loses a single thing, so the number moves back one step. For a 3 to 5 year old these are not sums. They are something that happens in front of them: a bird lands on the branch, a car drives out of the garage.
That is why the best way to teach one more and one less is with things a child can touch and watch. When they see 3 blocks become 4 because you added one, they link the counting words they already know to a real change. Later, that link is what makes adding and taking away make sense.
How do you teach it, step by step?
Start small, with numbers up to 5. Put out a group, such as 3 toy cars, and count them together, touching each one. Say the total clearly: "We have 3 cars." Then make one arrive with a little story: "Here comes one more car." Ask, "How many cars now?" and let your child count them all again from 1.
Do the same in reverse. With 4 ducks on a towel pond, say, "One duck swims away," and hide it behind your back. Ask, "How many are left?" Hiding the one that leaves helps, because the child only sees what is still there.
After many rounds, try a shortcut. Say, "We had 3, and one more came. What comes after 3?" When your child says 4 without counting from 1, the idea has clicked. Use the words "one more" and "one less" every time, so they become familiar.
Everyday moments that teach it for free
Snack time: put 4 crackers on a plate, your child eats one, and you ask how many are left. Stairs: each step up is one more, each step down is one less. Fingers: hold up 3, raise one more, and count. Bath time: 5 toys in the water, one jumps out.
A few minutes a day is enough. Stop while your child is still enjoying it, and come back to it tomorrow with different toys.
What to watch for
Counting from 1 again every time is normal at first; do not rush it. One less is usually harder than one more, because counting backwards takes more practice. Change the group by exactly one, not two or three, so the pattern stays clear. If your child gives a wrong number, do not correct it straight away. Say, "Let's count and check," and count together. Seeing the right answer for themselves teaches more than hearing it.
One more and one less: 8 games to play together
For a grown-up and a child aged 3 to 5. You need a few small toys, blocks or snacks. Play one or two games a day and stop while it is still fun.

Put 2 blocks on the table and count them together. Add 1 more block and ask: "How many blocks now?"
Hold up 3 fingers and count them together. Raise one more finger and ask how many fingers are up.
Put 4 crackers on a plate. Let your child eat 1, then ask: "How many are left on the plate?"
Line up 5 toy animals and count them. Hide 1 behind your back and ask: "How many can you see now?"
Climb 3 stairs together, counting each step. Go up one more and ask which step you are on now.
Put 3 cars in a row and say: "We have 3 cars. One more car comes. What comes after 3?" Do not let them count from 1 this time.
Ask without any objects: "You have 2 balloons and you get one more. How many balloons?" Keep a few toys nearby in case they want to check.
Act out a bus story with 5 toy passengers: one gets off, then one gets back on. Ask how many after each stop.
Common questions
At what age can a child understand one more and one less?
Many children start to get one more with real objects around age 3 to 4, once they can count a small group touching each object once. One less often comes a little later, around 4 to 5. Every child moves at their own pace, so follow your child rather than the calendar.
Is it a problem if my child counts from 1 again every time?
No. Counting the whole group again is the normal first step. Over time, remind your child of the number they already had, such as "We had 3 and one more came," and they will start naming the next number without recounting.
Why is one less harder than one more?
One more follows the counting order children already know: 1, 2, 3, 4. One less asks them to go backwards, which they have practiced far less. Counting down for a rocket launch, from 5 to 1, is a playful way to build that skill.
Should I use worksheets or toys?
Toys and real objects first. At this age a child learns by touching and watching, so a toy car driving away teaches more than a picture of one. Printed activities are useful as a guide for the grown-up about what to try and what to listen for.
What comes after one more and one less?
Once your child answers one more and one less up to 5 without counting from 1, go up to 10. After that come small number stories with two more or two less, and then simple adding and taking away, still with objects.
