Potato and sponge printing: 8 questions

Answer key

  1. On a potato stamp, which part gets the paint: the shape that stands up, or the part that was cut away?

The shape that stands up. The cut-away part is lower, so it does not touch the paper.

  2. Why do you brush on a thin layer of paint instead of dipping the stamp in a puddle of paint?

Too much paint squashes out at the sides, so the edges of the shape go blurry.

  3. You press the stamp and slide it a little before you lift it. What happens to the print?

It smudges. Press straight down and lift straight up to keep the edges sharp.

  4. You printed a row of blue squares. The next row should be yellow squares. What do you do before you print it?

Wipe the stamp clean on a damp cloth, pat it dry, then brush on yellow paint. The shape stays the same.

  5. Your row goes red circle, blue circle, red circle, blue circle, and so on. What color is the 7th circle?

Red. The 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th circles are red.

  6. Looking at the face of your stamp, the arrow points right. Which way will the printed arrow point?

Left. A print is a mirror image of the stamp.

  7. Which of these will look exactly the same on the print as on the stamp: a circle, the letter F, a square, an arrow?

The circle and the square, because their two halves match. The F and the arrow come out facing the other way.

  8. Each print is 4 cm wide and you leave 2 cm between prints. How long is a row of 3 prints?

    16 cm: 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 + 4 = 16. Three prints have only two gaps between them.
