- Trigonometry in the Right Triangle
How to solve trigonometry word problems?
Tackle trigonometry word problems by sketching the scenario as a right triangle and labeling the known sides and angles. Identify whether you need sine, cosine, or tangent based on your target angle and given measurements. Set up the equation, solve for the unknown value, and confirm that your result is realistic for the situation.
The topic explained
Turn the story into a labeled right triangle
Translating a trigonometry problem into math begins with visualizing the physical setup. Real objects form the sides of a right triangle. A vertical wall, flagpole, or tree represents the vertical leg perpendicular to the flat ground. The ground represents the horizontal leg.
Slanted objects, such as a leaning ladder or an access ramp, form the hypotenuse because they sit opposite the right angle formed by the ground and the vertical structure. A shadow cast on flat ground is always the horizontal side adjacent to the base of the object.
Choose the matching ratio
Once your triangle is drawn, locate your reference angle. Label the three sides relative to that angle: opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse. For a ramp, the vertical rise is the opposite side and the horizontal run is the adjacent side. Finding the ramp angle uses the tangent ratio, where tangent of the angle equals rise divided by run.
If you know the length of a ladder leaning against a wall and want to find how high it reaches, you work with the hypotenuse and the opposite side. That means using the sine ratio. When you need the distance from the ladder base to the wall, you work with the adjacent side and hypotenuse, which calls for cosine.
A concrete ladder example
Suppose a 16-foot ladder leans against a house, making a 72-degree angle with the ground. You want to know how high up the wall the ladder reaches. The ladder is the hypotenuse (16 feet), the wall is the opposite side (h), and the ground angle is 72 degrees.
Write the equation: sine of 72 degrees equals h divided by 16. Multiply 16 by the sine of 72 degrees on your calculator. This yields approximately 15.2 feet. Always verify that your answer makes sense: the height reached must be less than the 16-foot length of the ladder itself.

A 12-foot ladder leans against a vertical wall, making a 65-degree angle with the level ground. How high up the wall does the ladder reach?
A wheelchair ramp rises 1.5 feet vertically over a horizontal distance of 18 feet. What angle does the ramp make with the ground?
A vertical telephone pole casts a shadow that is 24 feet long on level ground when the angle of elevation of the sun is 52 degrees. How tall is the pole?
A 20-foot ladder reaches a window sill that is 17 feet above the ground. What angle does the ladder make with the ground?
A skateboard ramp is 10 feet long along its sloped surface and inclined at 22 degrees to the horizontal ground. How high is the top of the ramp off the ground?
A monument stands 150 feet tall. When you measure its shadow, it is 85 feet long. What is the angle of elevation of the sun?
Common questions
Why is a leaning ladder always the hypotenuse?
The wall and the ground meet at a 90-degree right angle. The ladder rests against both, bridging the open side directly across from the right angle. By definition, the side opposite the 90-degree angle in a right triangle is the hypotenuse.
What is the difference between horizontal run and ramp length?
Horizontal run is the flat distance along the ground from the start of the ramp to the point beneath its highest edge. Ramp length is the actual slanted surface you walk or roll on, which serves as the hypotenuse.
How do I decide between tangent and sine in shadow problems?
Shadow problems compare vertical height to horizontal ground length, which are the opposite and adjacent legs of the triangle. Because the sunbeam path (the hypotenuse) is rarely measured, tangent is almost always the right choice.
How can I tell if my final calculation is unreasonable?
Check your side lengths against the hypotenuse. The hypotenuse must always be the longest side in a right triangle. If your ladder reaches a height greater than the ladder itself, you either set up the ratio upside down or used the wrong trigonometric function.
What skills should students master before tackling these problems?
Students in 10th grade need to know how to identify opposite and adjacent sides relative to an acute angle, recall the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent, and comfortably use the inverse trigonometric keys on a scientific calculator.
