- The Cold War and a World Remade
Why did the wartime alliance break down?
The wartime alliance fell apart after World War II because the United States and the Soviet Union united only to defeat Nazi Germany. Once that common threat vanished in 1945, clashing ideologies, disputes at Yalta and Potsdam over Poland and Germany, and mutual fear swiftly turned wartime allies into bitter Cold War rivals.
The topic explained
A marriage of convenience against Hitler
To understand why relations began to break down between 1945 and 1948, one must first recognize that the Grand Alliance was never a partnership of shared values. The United States and Great Britain were capitalist democracies, whereas Joseph Stalin led an authoritarian communist state. They set aside mutual suspicion in June 1941 only because Adolf Hitler invaded the Soviet Union, creating a common enemy that required total military cooperation.
When the Allied armies met at the Elbe River in Germany in April 1945 and Germany surrendered in May, the single force holding the coalition together vanished. Without an existential threat to unite them, longstanding ideological hostility, territorial anxieties, and contrasting plans for postwar security immediately resurfaced.
Disagreements at Yalta and Potsdam in 1945
Tensions deepened at the major wartime summits. In February 1945 at the Yalta Conference in Crimea, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Stalin agreed to divide Germany and Berlin into four occupation zones. Stalin signed the Declaration on Liberated Europe, promising free and unfettered elections in Eastern Europe. However, having lost an estimated 27 million Soviet citizens during the war, Stalin viewed a communist-dominated Poland as a vital buffer against future invasions.
By July 1945 at Potsdam, the diplomatic atmosphere had deteriorated. President Harry S. Truman, suspicious of Soviet intentions and newly emboldened by the successful Trinity atomic bomb test, confronted Stalin over Soviet repression in Poland. The leaders compromised on reparations, allowing the Soviets to extract industrial equipment from their eastern zone, but deep distrust made joint administration of Germany impossible.
Soviet satellite states and Western containment
Between 1945 and 1948, the Soviet Union methodically installed pro-Soviet communist regimes across Eastern Europe through rigged elections, police intimidation, and the elimination of opposition leaders in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Czechoslovakia. In March 1946, Churchill warned that an iron curtain had descended across the continent.
The United States responded in March 1947 with the Truman Doctrine, pledging military aid to resist communist expansion, and in June 1947 with the Marshall Plan, which poured billions of dollars into Western European reconstruction. Moscow condemned the Marshall Plan as capitalist imperialism, barred its Eastern European satellites from participating, and created Cominform and Comecon to enforce political and economic control, finalizing the partition of Europe.
How historians explain the collapse
Historians disagree on who bears primary responsibility for the breakdown. Traditionalist Western historians writing in the 1950s placed the blame squarely on aggressive Soviet expansionism and Stalin's violation of the Yalta agreements. In the 1960s, revisionist historians argued that the United States provoked the conflict through aggressive economic diplomacy, atomic diplomacy, and an unwillingness to accommodate legitimate Soviet security needs.
After Soviet archives opened in 1991, post-revisionist historians developed a more nuanced consensus: the Cold War was driven by a tragic spiral of mutual misperception, ideological dogmatism on both sides, and Stalin's ruthless opportunism combined with intense geopolitical insecurity.

Common questions
What grade level studies the breakdown of the wartime alliance?
This topic is taught in 11th grade in American high schools, typically for students aged 16 to 17 in Modern World History, US History, or AP European and AP US History courses.
What is the difference between the Yalta and Potsdam conferences?
Yalta in February 1945 focused on wartime strategy and postwar borders while Roosevelt was still alive and Germany was undefeated. Potsdam in July 1945 occurred after Germany fell, with Truman and Clement Attlee replacing Roosevelt and Churchill, leading to sharper conflict over German reparations and Polish borders.
What was the significance of Churchill's Iron Curtain speech?
Delivered in Fulton, Missouri, in March 1946, Churchill's speech publicly declared that an ideological and military barrier had split Europe, alerting the Western public to Soviet domination of Eastern Europe and crystallizing Cold War rhetoric.
What is the post-revisionist view of the Cold War origins?
Post-revisionist historians, supported by declassified Soviet records after 1991, argue that neither side was exclusively to blame. Instead, conflicting ideologies, mutual paranoia, and miscalculations locked both superpowers into an unavoidable geopolitical rivalry.
How did Stalin consolidate control over Eastern European governments?
Stalin used gradual pressure often called salami tactics: forming coalition governments with non-communists, seizing control of police forces, rigging national elections, and arresting or executing opposition leaders between 1945 and 1948.
