- The French Revolution
Where did left and right in politics come from?
The modern political concepts of left and right originated in the French National Assembly during the summer of 1789. Delegates who supported King Louis XVI and traditional royal authority sat on the assembly president's right. Reformers who wanted radical change and constitutional limits sat on the left, establishing our modern political vocabulary.

The 1789 Assembly and the Physical Divide
To discover where the foundational terms of our politics actually come from, historians point directly to August and September 1789 in Versailles and Paris. As the National Constituent Assembly debated whether King Louis XVI should hold an absolute veto over legislation, lawmakers physically separated into two camps. Nobility and clergy who wanted to preserve royal authority and Catholic traditions sat on the assembly president's right. Deputies who favored limiting royal power, expanding voting rights, and dismantling feudal privileges gathered on the left.
This seating choice was not an accident of architecture. In European tradition, the right-hand seat held prestige and honor. Royalists clustered there to signal their loyalty to the crown, while reformers congregated opposite them. What began as a practical seating habit quickly turned into political shorthand: the right came to mean conservation and order, while the left came to mean change and equality.
Burke Versus Paine: The Debate Over Change
The divide soon sparked an intellectual debate that still defines conservative and progressive thought. In November 1790, British statesman Edmund Burke published Reflections on the Revolution in France. Burke warned that destroying inherited institutions like the monarchy, church, and nobility would produce chaos and tyranny. He argued that society is an unwritten contract between the living, the dead, and the unborn, requiring slow, cautious reform rather than sudden destruction.
In early 1791, Thomas Paine answered Burke with Rights of Man. Paine defended the revolution, insisting that no past generation had the authority to bind the living to oppressive traditions. He argued that human rights are natural and universal, meaning people have a duty to overthrow unfair governments. Burke laid the cornerstone of modern political conservatism, while Paine articulated modern democratic radicalism.
Class Struggle, Culture, and Divided Memory
Historians still disagree over how to explain the French Revolution. In the mid-twentieth century, Marxist historians like Georges Lefebvre interpreted 1789 primarily as a class struggle. In their view, a wealthy urban middle class, the bourgeoisie, overthrew a dying feudal nobility to establish capitalism. Beginning in the 1970s, revisionist historians led by François Furet challenged this model. They proved that many nobles shared business interests with wealthy commoners, arguing instead that the revolution was primarily a political and cultural explosion driven by democratic ideas and language.
This contested legacy survives in modern France. Every July 14, France celebrates Bastille Day with military parades in Paris, honoring national unity and republican liberty. Yet in western regions like the Vendée, memory is different. There, in 1793, peasants and local nobles revolted against republican conscription and attacks on Catholic clergy. The revolutionary government crushed the uprising with brutal violence, killing tens of thousands. In the Vendée, the revolution is often remembered not as a triumph of rights, but as state terror.

In what year and during which debate did delegates first split into the left and right sides of the assembly floor?
Identify what the right side stood for and what the left side stood for in the French National Assembly of 1789.
Explain the core warning Edmund Burke issued in his 1790 book Reflections on the Revolution in France.
How did Thomas Paine counter Burke's argument in Rights of Man (1791)?
Contrast the Marxist interpretation of the revolution with the revisionist interpretation led by François Furet.
Read this excerpt from Thomas Paine: 'Every age and generation must be as free to act for itself in all cases as the ages and generations which preceded it.' Explain whether this viewpoint reflects modern left-wing or right-wing political philosophy.
Why does the Vendée region in western France view the revolution differently than people celebrating Bastille Day in Paris?
Common questions
Why did delegates choose the right and left sides in 1789?
The right-hand side of a monarch or assembly president traditionally symbolized authority, honor, and loyalty. Monarchist deputies naturally sat on the right to show support for the crown, leaving the left side open for deputies who demanded constitutional reform.
Did left and right mean the same thing in 1789 as they do today?
Not entirely. In 1789, the right favored monarchy and aristocracy, while the left favored free markets, individual property, and a written constitution. Today, economic issues have shifted, but the fundamental divide between preserving established order and pushing for social equality remains intact.
How long does this French Revolution lesson take to master?
Most 10th grade students grasp the political spectrum and historiographical debates in one to two 45-minute study sessions, especially when comparing excerpts from Edmund Burke and Thomas Paine directly.
What mistakes do students commonly make when studying Burke and Paine?
Students often assume Burke hated all reform, or that Paine supported the Reign of Terror. In reality, Burke supported the American Revolution's defense of chartered rights, while Paine condemned the execution of King Louis XVI and was imprisoned during the Terror.
