- Euclidean Geometry: Triangles and Circles
What is the relationship between central and inscribed angles?
When a central angle and an inscribed angle intercept the same arc of a circle, the measure of the central angle is twice the measure of the inscribed angle. Conversely, the inscribed angle is exactly half the central angle. For example, if a central angle measures 70 degrees, any inscribed angle intercepting that identical arc measures 35 degrees.
The topic explained
Understanding central and inscribed angles
A central angle has its vertex directly at the center of the circle, with radii forming its sides. An inscribed angle has its vertex on the circle itself, with chords forming its sides. Both types of angles open up to capture a portion of the circle boundary, known as the intercepted arc.
The fundamental theorem connecting central and inscribed angles states that the inscribed angle is always half the measure of the central angle standing on the exact same arc. Because a central angle has the same degree measure as its intercepted arc, the inscribed angle is also equal to half of that arc measure.
Two key rules based on the theorem
First, any two inscribed angles that intercept the same arc are equal to each other. Because both angles equal half of the identical arc, their measures must match, no matter where their vertices sit along the remaining boundary of the circle.
Second, any angle inscribed in a semicircle measures exactly 90 degrees. A diameter divides a circle into two 180-degree semicircular arcs. A central angle along this straight line measures 180 degrees, making any inscribed angle that opens to the diameter half of 180 degrees, which is a right angle.
Step-by-step calculation and chord relationships
To find an unknown angle, first identify the intercepted arc shared by the angles. Suppose points A and B lie on a circle with center O, and point C lies on the circle boundary outside arc AB. If angle AOB measures 116 degrees, angle ACB intercepts that same arc AB. Divide 116 by 2 to find that angle ACB measures 58 degrees.
Equal chords also connect directly to this concept. In a single circle, congruent chords cut off congruent arcs. Therefore, central angles subtended by equal chords are equal, and inscribed angles standing on equal chords are also equal. Watch out for angles that open in opposite directions, as they do not intercept the same arc.

Arc AB measures 84 degrees. Central angle AOB intercepts arc AB. What is the measure of angle AOB?
Inscribed angle APB intercepts arc AB, which measures 84 degrees. What is the measure of angle APB?
In circle O, central angle COD measures 130 degrees. Inscribed angle CED intercepts the same arc CD. Find the measure of angle CED.
Segment XY is a diameter of circle O. Point Z is a point on the circle distinct from X and Y. What is the measure of angle XZY?
Two inscribed angles, angle PRQ and angle PSQ, intercept the exact same arc PQ. If angle PRQ measures 38 degrees, what is the measure of angle PSQ?
In circle O, chord AB is congruent to chord CD. Central angle AOB measures 54 degrees. Inscribed angle CPD intercepts arc CD. What is the measure of angle CPD?
Common questions
Why is an inscribed angle half the central angle?
Drawing a diameter through the inscribed vertex divides the angle into isosceles triangles formed by circle radii. Using the exterior angle theorem on each triangle proves that the central angle is the sum of two equal base angles, making the inscribed angle exactly half.
What is the most common mistake with central and inscribed angles?
The most common mistake is confusing which angle is doubled and which is halved. The central angle is always the larger angle, closer to the center, while the inscribed angle reaches all the way across to the circle wall and is smaller.
Does this theorem apply if the center is outside the inscribed angle?
Yes. The theorem holds true whether the circle center lies inside the inscribed angle, on one of its chords, or entirely outside the inscribed angle. The algebraic proof accounts for all three cases by adding or subtracting angles.
What geometry topic comes after inscribed angles?
Students typically study cyclic quadrilaterals next, where opposite angles sum to 180 degrees. That property is derived directly from the inscribed angle theorem applied to two angles intercepting opposite arcs that together form a complete circle.
